Theatrical Contact Lenses

Accessorize Your Costume With Theatrical Contact Lenses

Theatrical contact lenses are disposable contact lenses that are made for the theater or for television and movie parts.  Some characters, especially in horror films, have wild eyes or their eyes change as they transform into their character creatures.  These special effects are done with theatrical contact lenses.

Theatrical contact lenses can have any design or be coloured in any way that you can imagine.  The actor can get a fresh new look to his eyes when he awakens from the dead by wearing dull contacts before and bright contacts after.  That is a subtle change that can be made in the theater with theatrical contact lenses.  A more drastic change that can be made is one in which a man turns into a werewolf or a vampire or a zombie.  These all need to have very different eyes throughout the change and may require several costume changes including theatrical contact lenses.

Theaters around the world, from Los Angeles to Minneapolis to Broadway in New York City use theatrical contact lenses.  One of the very popular shows that might have used theatrical contact lenses was CATS, which was a long running Broadway show that traveled the country as well as was filmed for a feature motion picture.  The characters in the play are all cats and they had cat’s eyes.  This effect was done using theatrical contact lenses.

You can find theatrical contact lenses for sale around Halloween time quite easily, but you really need to be careful about cheap cosmetic theatrical contact lenses.  If you want contact lenses that do not correct your vision but want them just for a Halloween costume it is still a good idea to see an eye doctor and get a prescription so that you can order a particular size to fit your eyes.

You should also order your theatrical contact lenses from a reputable company.  Don’t buy them off of the shelf in the Halloween costume aisle at the department store because you are very likely to have some serious problems with your eyes with extended use of these contact lenses.

Some reputable contact lens manufacturers such as Boston XO do not sell theatrical contact lenses per se, but they do sell coloured contact lenses in some odd colors like ice blue.  Some of these colors might be appropriate for your costume needs and may save you some money as opposed to purchasing theatrical contact lenses from a company that specializes in them for the purpose of selling them to movies and theaters.

That said, there are several companies who do specialize in making actual theatrical contact lenses and you can find some very cool or very scary contact lenses through them.  You can have zombie eyes or cat’s eyes or eyes that are solid black or white.  If you are a fan of one famous illusionist, you can even get theatrical contact lenses with a red circled letter A.

Theatrical contact lenses are fun and a great way to complete any Halloween costume, or just fun to wear if you are the adventurous type who likes to shock people with subtle notions like strange or shocking looking eyes.
